The Golden State Killer became notorious for his disturbing habit of taunting authorities and his victims both before and after his attacks, often through phone calls.

Although there are over 10 phone calls attributed to the killer, only 3 of them have been recorded.

1977 “Never Gonna Catch Me” Call

On December 2, 1977, a man claiming to be the East Area Rapist called the Sacramento Police, saying: “You’re never gonna catch me, East Area Rapist, you dumb fuckers. I’m gonna fuck again tonight. Careful!”

The call was recorded and later released to the public. The killer attacked his next victim that same night.

1978 “Is Ray There?” and “Gonna Kill You” Calls

A month later, on January 2, 1978, the first known rape victim received a wrong-number call asking for “Ray.”

The soft-spoken caller didn’t raise alarm until later that evening when the phone rang again. This time, the victim instantly recognized the voice of her assailant.

After 20 seconds of heavy breathing, the caller whispered, “Gonna kill you… gonna kill you… gonna kill you… bitch… bitch… bitch… bitch… fucking whore.”

Several previous victims who listened to the recording identified the caller as their assailant.

Four days later, a man claiming to be the Golden State Killer called the Contact Counseling Service and said:

“I have a problem. I need help because I don’t want to do this anymore.”

After a short conversation, the caller said, “I believe you are tracing this call” and hung up.

Following the CCS call, the Golden State Killer continued his reign of psychological abuse by taunting at least three previous victims.

In 2001, the calls abruptly stopped, and the deranged killer disappeared without a trace until his arrest in 2018.

On April 24, 2018, thanks to forensic genealogy, Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies identified the Golden State Killer as 72-year-old former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo.
